My pregnancy diary

On these pages you can read my pregnancy and birth diary. I have included my measurements each week, photos and some notes that focus particularly on how much exercise I did that week, how my body was changing and how I was feeling. See how I fit in a full time job, part time fitness instructing, exercise and everything else…..and who is Herman?!

I haven’t included measurements for my thighs, calves, biceps and chest as they didn’t really change that much (more or less an inch on each). You can also read about my first nine weeks after having Elise and how my body changed during that time. Photos start at week 7 and green text shows change that week. Weight changes are shown in pounds, measurements in inches.

Notes: Felt weid teaching my aerobics class for the first time, took it a bit easier I think, will take some getting used to. Got a bad stitch when I tried to run so went on cross trainer instead.
Body: Not feeling that different, feels like period pains. Worse at night. Dull ache in tummy and achy boobs on and off. Sure I am hungrier already!
What else? Hasn’t sunk in yet! Delighted but frightened something will go wrong.

Notes: Enjoyed exercise a bit more this week, although took it a little bit easier when teaching my classes again. Touch wood no sickness or feeling really rough yet!
Body: Pretty much the same as last week, nothing bad, don’t look any different! A bit more tired than usual, but that might be in my head!
What else? Already desperate for 12 week scan. Mum told me to enjoy every minute.

Notes: Started walking from work to station as many times as possible (25 mins) to add more low impact activity. Have to make it brisk though so I don’t miss the bus!
Body: Underlying sickness most of the week (bit like a hangover). Much hungrier, but trying to keep it healthy. Quite tired. Belly looks a little bit bloated and feels a bit tingly. A few light cramps back and front.
What else? 2 lovely workmates very excited, feeling a bit emotional!

Week 8

Notes: Not feeling that energetic, but enjoying exercise once I get started – stops me feeling sick! Trouble is getting motivated, but still getting on with it; never been easy after day at work!
Body: Still feeling pretty nauseous, tummy bit upset and feel tired. Don’t look any different yet I don’t think.
What else? Getting up for 4 wees some nights. Bought first pregnancy magazine – very exciting!

Week 9

Notes: Same as last week – sickness not helping motivation! Glad I have started more walking so am keeping active without it seeming like too much effort. Also did 3-plan at home 3 times which made me feel good.
Body: Still not a proper bump yet, look like I have had a big currry! Clothes starting to feel a bit tighter now though.
What else? First midwife appointment, very short and to the point! Lots of paperwork. Cris being very considerate.

Week 10

Notes: Doing ok with the exercise. Didn’t feel like teaching classes but enjoyed it as much as ever when I got there. Running still fine too – 40 minutes doesn’t feel like too much. Nice to feel active as am eating more to help with nausea!
Body: My tummy is starting to look a bit wobbly and I’m sure I’ve got a little bump now (although that might just be because I’ve stopped doing sit ups!) Rest all pretty much as before. Boobs hurt a bit.
What else? Worried about some bloody discharge but was ok, quite common to have a little bit I think. Feeling very grumpy! Am I really pregnant?!

Week 11

Notes: Had quite a good exercise week this week. Was really tired on Monday, but even on tired days am doing walk to bus (25 mins) which is really nice after being stuck in the office all day. Classes still ok and 3-plan easy to fit in.
Body: Not much change apart from a slight paunch, which is probably wind and bloating anyway! Not looking forward to the ‘in between’ bit of just looking fatter – nothing or properly pregnant is best!
What else? Scan was amazing, best thing ever. So relieved ok. Getting hungry, so trying to have healthy snacks.

Week 12

Notes: Not a bad week this week – the weather wasn’t great which doesnt do much for motivation, but still managed to do something most days. Walk to station makes me feel like less of a blob after a day at my desk eating!
Body: Starting to feel a bit wobbly round the middle. Have a little bump now, but still hiding it ok with the right outfits. Indigestion and wind is pretty bad and going to poo is painful which is not nice. Felt sick on and off but not too bad.
What else? Told everyone at wok which was a relief. Had a fainty episode but nothing serious.

Week 13

Notes: Had course in London so did a bit of walking, but threw my routine a bit. Should still be able to fit sessions in ok. Still enjoying exercise and feeling good during it, which is good. Particularly enjoying 3-plan at home (in PJs most of time!)
Body: Not much of a bump in the mornings, but seems to be big by the evening! No sucking tummy in any more, can see a bump, but I like it. Will like it more when is like a proper baby bump!
What else? Workmate Ali told me about hypnobirthing, am going to investigate – VERY scared about birth.

Week 14

Notes: Week off this week so more time than usual to fit in exercise. Also, the weather has been gorgeous so really enjoyed running and being outdoors. Taught first outdoor parkfit sesssion with the girls. Nice to be out of office.
Body: As we have had a week off I feel like a bit of a pig, bit wobblier than usual, even though the scales are telling me I am the same. Find that hard to believe. Little bump hasn’t changed much. People I havent seen for a while notice, which I like.
What else? Lovely week off with Cris. Ordered hypnobirthing book as thoughts of birth still keeping me awake.

Week 15

Notes: Not a bad week for exercise again this week. Still feeling quite motivated, am still not that big yet! Still enjoying jogging and doing 3-plan in my bedroom. Keen to go swimming but never have the time!
Body: Starting to feel like a bit of a pudding which is silly as I have only put on 4 pounds since I got pregnant. Is just because I am eating a bit more and my tummy is a bit squidgy. Feeling quite tired (but that’s getting back to work after week off I expect), feeling very good all in all!What else? Read hypnobirthing book – am going to sign us up! Cat likes to sit on tum, hope baby likes the purring!

Week 16

Notes: Luckily got to work at home on Friday which meant I could fit in my quota of sessions. Still enjoying my weekly jog, but felt more out of breath teaching outdoor class on Saturday. Still teaching body conditioning pretty much as before and feeling ok.
Body: Definitely got a nice round belly now – bump forming nicely! First week I think it is really starting to show. Feeling pretty healthy but quite tired. Skin quite bad, got a few spots.
What else? Getting my head around inevitable weight gain – hard for fitness instructor, but trying to enjoy the whole experience and stay as healthy as possible. Trouble is I just want grated cheese and hot cross buns this week!

Week 17

Notes: Still really enjoying teaching my classes, my bump is still quite small so is not getting in the way yet. Doing ab pull ins, bum squeezes and pelvic floor exercises on the bus every day as part of 3-plan.
Body: Still not noticing a lot of change, but everyone keeps telling me my bump will suddenly be huge – great! My skin has cleared up a bit (that was horrible!) and my boobs still seem to be growing, which is awesome for an A cup!
What else? Heard baby’s heartbeat at midwife appointment which was great and held my friend’s baby – never held one before!

Week 18

Notes: We were away at Cris’s mums this weekend so I just about managed to get my sessions in. We did more walking, but I missed not doing more ‘proper’ exercise. Still feeling fine doing exercise, the odd little cramp but nothing bad.
Body: Still just looking like I have gained a few pounds as opposed to looking pregnant. My arms and legs look the same thank god!What else? Having a bit of a rubbish week, cut all my hair off which I regret and don’t feel like am ‘blooming’. We all have good and bad weeks I guess.

Week 19

Notes: Not a great week for exercise as was bank holiday and had my course in London. Feeling a bit lacking in motivation and tired some days, especially after work, but always feel after exercise! Am thinking about maintaining some degree of tone and fitness to make things easier afterwards!
Body: My clothes suddenly feel a bit tight. Still in old clothes most of the time (not jeans!) but might have to get some nice maternity ones soon.
What else? Feeling a few flutterings in my tummy this week. Hope everything’s ok, everyone says I ‘should’ be feeling movements by now. Scan next week thankfully.

Week 20

Notes: OK exercise week, as time is going on needing more motivation to do it, especially as in the office 5 days. Always feel better after it. Trying to get a good balance of cardio and toning. If I don’t feel like much else at least am power walking from work to station to keep moving and prevent bum spread!!
Body: Definitely noticing belly growth now and I think other people are a bit more too although in the right clothes still looks like I’ve just had too much cake! Still in some of my regular clothes which is good for the half way point. Bit spotty this week.
What else? Had the 20 week scan this week and we were both really nervous to find out sex and in case something was wrong. The baby was being awkward and I had to go for two 20 minute walks to try and get it to change position, but it wouldn’t! Means they could only measure half of what they wanted to and we have to go back but thats ok! She said she couldnt see sex clearly, but would say a girl if she had to guess. I would be really happy if that’s true but trying to put it out of my mind until the next one now!

Week 21

Notes: Had a really good jog on Monday which still felt very comfortable and made me feel fab afterwards. Hard to fit in 3-plan sometimes, but making the effort and making feel like I am staying toned.
Body: Still no huge bump – everyone at work was saying yesterday I just have a ‘normal’ stomach now! I feel like it is big though! Feeling quite well though apart from odd mild headache.
What else? Thought I might have felt my first movements this week – was sort of like a push on one side when I was laying in bed and happended a couple of times in the same place. Not much today though. I know once it starts moving I’ll constantly obsess that I can’t feel it moving and start to worry!

Week 22

Notes: We were away this week so didn’t do normal exercise routine, but went swimming 3 times which I loved. We also did lots of walking every day and I have still squeezed in 3-plan so been a good week (despite holiday indulgences!) Really want to swim more often now!
Body: Bump definitely present now! Could get away with not looking pregnant with loose clothes on, but anything tight there’s no hiding. No drastic changes to body size elsewhere. Broken veins starting to appear on bod, hope they are not permanent!
What else? Really nice to have a week away from the house – no housework, computer etc. Felt very relaxed, even though we fitted a lot in – no getting up and doing what you want when you want is bliss! And sticky toffee pud for lunch! Feeling a lot more movement now which I am really happy about – every night after dinner baby goes a bit mad when I lay down. Am beside myself with excitement about the scan next week, at least holiday kept my mind of it!

Week 23

Notes: Back to work this week so back to normal exercise. Was pretty knackered by the end of the week. Still feeling good, enjoying being active. Getting a bit harder to motivate, but trying to not use pregnancy as too much of an excuse.
Body: Couple of insensitive comments at work this week (humungous – really?!) but I know am not growing everywhere too much, although weight gain steady (and still a bit scary). Getting a bit used to bump (and lots of jiggling), not quite ready for how big it will be yet I don’t think! No more boob growth noticeable – shame!
What else? We had our scan this week and found out (more or less) that we are having a girl. Am so happy. Wouldnt have been disappointed with a boy, but am looking forward to being really close to a baby girl, like I am with mum. All scan things came back fine which is a relief, so looking good! No more scans now, just hope everything goes smoothly from now on. Heard some screaming from labour ward at work this week – v scary! 11 weeks and counting until work finishes – hurry up! Lots to do and buy, but must enjoy it all now and make most of time with boyf.

Week 24

Notes: Teaching classes felt a bit harder this week – got a bit more out of breath. Will take it a bit easier next week. Only 2 weeks left! Cross trainer and 3-plan still feel good and like I am working out without pushing it too hard. Really looking forward to starting swimming too. Miss going for the burn though!!
Body: Proper belly forming, the rest is still looking ok thanks to exercise methinks. Thrush again which sucks.
What else? Getting more excited by the week now! She is really moving around a lot- quite often at night which is not good for sleeping but I don’t mind. After dinner too. Now am 24 weeks I can’t believe she could actually be born (although let’s hope shes not that keen!) Started looking at stuff for nursery and names. Reading loads of mags and books which I love.

Week 25

Notes: Taught second to last aerobics class this week – felt harder. First real week I have felt that my body is telling me to slow down. Was hot too so was trying not to overheat. Own exercise still making me feel good and not finding it too hard to motivate myself. As soon as I start I enjoy it!
Body: Had a growth spurt this week as is evident from scary sudden ‘3 pounds in one week’ weight gain! What is that about?! Have been just as active. Maybe sprout is having a growth spurt. Glad bump looks like bump!
What else? Weight gain scary!! I hope this isnt going to continue for the next 15 weeks! I guess all I can do is carry on eating healthily and keeping active. If sprout needs to grow some more thats all good Ii guess. Glad to get to week 25, every week feel happier that sprout will be ok. Baby stuff occupying thoughts a lot. Ordered some baby stuff – a cot, monitor and some other bits – very exciting! We have been looking at names again and have shortlist. Last week of fitness instructing. Feels like time to wind it down.

Week 26

Notes: Got a horrible cold this week so not feeling great, but still making the effort with doing exercise. Finished my instructing which was quite sad, although right time to finish. Cross trainer and 3-plan still feel good. Getting more tummy cramps in the daytime, but seem ok when I exercise.
Body: Weight being very strange – must have just been retaining a lot of water last week, back to the 1 pound a week gain which is better. Bump still quite compact at the moment – feel like still just look fat in some work outfits! Not sleeping great because of cold.
What else? Am trying to eat healthily and about the same amounts as I always have – snacking on lots of fruit and most of our dinners are veg, meat and carbs. Did have a wedge of banana cake last night, but deserved that after long week at work! Have realised that body is very unpredictable during pregnancy! Felt quite emotional finishing classes, just hope I can get back to them afterwards. Lots of movement from sprout which I love and heard heartbeat at the midwife which was nice. Feel quite tired at work, but pretty good on the whole apart from cold. Starting to get excited about arrival.

Week 27

Notes: Still got my cold so the start of the week was a bit of a write off for exercise, which makes me feel a bit slobby. I know is best just to rest when I am feeling rubbish though. Means I have to fit lots in at the weekend! So glad have cross trainer at home.
Body: No weight gain this week, but is probably following on from a couple of weeks ago when I put on 3lbs. Body feels ok, bump seems to be growing more rapidly now, but at the moment the rest of it all still feels ok and quite toned.
What else? Quite happy with a 1 stone weight gain at the 6 month mark – is healthy but not excessive and I feel good (apart from the cold!) Sprout is quite active in the evening now – still enjoying pregnancy! I know I have been lucky till now though, hope the last trimester is as kind. Am going to stick with the exercise and healthy eating as it seems to have helped so far. Glad as every week passes that sprout is getting bigger and stronger – can’t believe she could survive now if she was born – we arent ready yet! Lots of people telling me about friends who were told they were having girls and had boys – I wouldnt mind, but would have to take all the pink stuff back!!

Week 28

NotesHave got a small groin hernia which is a pain – to do with pressure of bump. Cycling is still ok at the moment and still doing 3-plan, but having to adapt some moves. Enjoying exercise so much, making me feel good. Will keep going and just be mindful of Herman (the hernia).
Body: Main issue this week is hernia. Bump seems to have had another growth spurt, which I guess I putting pressure on it. Rest of body feels ok, must try and carry on with some sort of exercise so that all my good work up until now not undone.
What else? Had a lovely birthday with Cris which I really needed. Hypnobirthing was good again – nice ideas about how to bond with baby and relaxation techniques which I must make the effort to practice. Busy week though – am looking forward to slowing down a bit when work finishes.

Week 29

Notes: Still bit down about the hernia, but is just one of those things. Have adapted 3-plan exercises to take pressure off groin so still doing that. Will keep cycling. Must try and go swimming soon too.
BodySame as last week really – don’t feel like rest of bod is changing dramatically (although is still plenty of time for that!) Bump still growing, but that hopefully means sprout is growing well. Groin feels quite achy by the end of most days but better early on. Getting quite tired in the eves but apart from that feeling good!
What else? Glad I can still do exercise at the moment – makes me feel good. Baby feels more real by the day, have started reading and playing music to bump, which is nice. Cris has been in Sweden which was horrible, so pleased he is back. Work hard work with awards, can’t wait for maternity leave to start!

Week 30

Notes: Hernia so far hasn’t affected my exercise too much. Can still do my 3-plan and cycling and am trying to walk on the days I don’t have time to do anything else. Makes me feel good, which must be a good thing
Body: Herman and groin feels quite achy at the end of the day, some days worse than others. Think I have noticed the start of stretch marks -arrgghh! very tiny though, might just be paranoid. Feeling quite big now, even though I know it’s mainly on bump. Growing at mad rate!
What else? This week has flown by, getting a bit worried that there isn’t much time left! Really glad to get to 30 weeks, feels like a bit of a milestone. Getting head into hypnobirthing and trying to practice lots – is hard to fit in but I know it will be worth it and it does seem to be helping me sleep. Also still doing pelvic floors, bum squeezes and ab squeezes on bus every day which I think is worth sticking with. Sprout moving a lot which is nice, have started reading to her a bit and playing her music, which hopefully she’ll like when she arrives. Felt a bit stressed this week – work still full on – be glad when awards over next week and can wind down for leaving.

Week 31

NotesHad this week off so easy to fit in exercise. Me and Cris went swimming for the first time which was good – hard at first but got into it – will def try and do again. Herman not getting any worse, got groin support to wear while exercising now which feels great. Still enjoying exercise and not finding it too hard.
Body: Bump growing quickly now but luckily don’t have that really breathless feeling that lots of people get – bump still compact compared to most I guess. Stretchmarks haven’t come to much yet but there’s still time. Noticed cellulite worse on arse and have some if I pinch calf – wasnt there before. Or maybe it was!
What else? Had a really nice week off with boyf – we had a couple of busy days with awards at work and renting out flat, but overall just nice to spend time together. Friend has lent me some lovely stuff, keen to get things ready now, next step is furniture and cot. She could come early, but is unlikely. Glad still feeling well overall – bit hormonal and Herman has been uncomfortable at times after long day but all very good in scheme of things.

Week 32

Notes: Not so easy to fit exercise in this week, but still trying to do 25 min walk to station on the days I can’t work out. Makes a difference that it is so hot – working out feels a bit harder! Feel like am slowing down a bit, but doing 3-plan good as can do at own pace.
Body: Bump seems to be growing at a rate of knots now! Lots of people have told me I have suddenly had a growth spurt – thanks for that! Body above bump hasn’t changed much, boobs havent grown since small early spurt – bummer! Getting a wobblier looking round the bum area (or do I just think that?!), but below knees ok. Will try and stay active and healthy.
What else? Bit shitty getting back to work after lovely week off – had got used to having more sleep! Only 3 more weeks to go now though. Finished hypnobirthing and really enjoyed it, but is a lot to practice every day. Great experience whatever though and boyf got a lot out of it. Midwife said bump perfect size and heartbeat strong which is fab. Baby kicking loads – quite painful at work yesterday – don’t mind though – happy for her to have a party in my tum! Better than not much moving.

Week 33

Notes: Has finally got to the point where is becoming a bit harder to motivate myself to exercise. Would be fine if I wasn’t at work but quite tired after work. Still doing it though! – More smaller chunks are easier to fit in so doing it that way.
Body: Early this week noticed was getting uncomfortable downstairs – got a mirror and had a look and is quite swollen and veiny – gave me a right fright! I am not feeling noticeably bigger all over, but still waiting to suddenly pile it on! No stretch marks yet – please let this continue!! Lots of body oil!
What else? Went to the docs about discomfort downstairs. She said veins and swelling quite normal and should go away after both, can just try and improve symptoms a bit – cold baths etc. Doc told me with Herman should be perfectly safe to have natural birth, would be very unlikey that hernia would strangulate during labour although they’ll keep an eye. Nothing I can do in the meantime though – sucks! Wish Herman would just go back to where he came from! So pleased can have natural birth.
 

Week 34

Notes: Had a bit of a tough week exercise wise. Only in office 3 days so easier to fit in little chunks but been really achy around Herman and under groin. Hope it eases off – exercise really helps keep my spirits up!Body: My downstairs been very painful at work – think is sitting at desk all day – only a week to go now. Am starting to feel bigger now as is getting a bit uncomfortable to move around – tummy seems to be growing by the minute. Body confidence not great this week. Skin not great and bum looks big and lumpy!What else? Looking forward to maternity leave – having more time will mean that I don’t have to squeeze jobs in and rush around. Trying to practice hypnobirthing – really looking forward to her arriving now – I want labour to just start! I hope it doesn’t go on for ages after due date – I can’t wait that long! Really want to keep my exercise up so I don’t lose the benefits. One more week at work – can just about manage that I hope!!

Week 35

Notes: New thigh stepper good fun, got off ebay, still enjoying exercise and making me feel good.
Body: On Wednesday I had a really sharp pain in my back. Midwife said baby had dropped into pelvis head first and was pushing on back nerve – temporary luckily! Also got some shooting pains in inner thighs, think that is related too. Body still feeling ok – bump feels enormous now! Hit the stone and a half mark which is healthy and on track.
What else? Head dropping very exciting, especially as had a little bit of browny discharge too – midwife thought might be a bit of a show – means everything moving in the right direction -I want her to come now. Finished work which was really weird, looking forward to some downtime, but a bit anxious about losing control of my work. Am sure will all be fine, but like everything to be perfect!

Notes: Am enjoying exercise more now that I am on maternity leave – can do it when I want rather than trying to squeeze it in. Now quite easy to fit something in every day and some walking. Glad I have been able to keep everything up. Stepper good for small bursts of cardio after doing 3-plan.
Body: Body still changing by the day! Back much better this week – have had twinges on and off and inner thigh pains, but all related to baby being lower which am happy about – right direction – I want her here! Still not scared of labour because of hypnobirthing but back of mind I don’t want to rip open! Hard to know what to wear now as bump expands – couple of faves all the time!
What else? Went back to midwife this week – baby gone from 4/5 to 3/5 engaged in pelvis so she is moving down. She also said hand by head at the mo, so hopefully she’ll pull that back in! Maternity leave suprisingly busy, but really nice! Can easily fit in hypno, exercising, seeing people and some chill out time which is lovely. I really want to meet baby now – hope she doesn’t go overdue – already getting impatient, although looking forward to NCT this weekend. Boyf getting really involved and swatting up on hypno stuff so I know he’ll be fab when it happens. Nursery and bag all sorted – maybe just one more week of mat leave be nice!!

This is my diary entry a few days after the birth (the hypnobirthing was amazing…)

She decided to appear 3 weeks and one day early!

My waters broke at 1.00am and because she was a day under 37 weeks we were told to go straight to hospital but there was no need to rush. I had a shower and we got the bag ready and got to hospital about 2.30am (I even paid for an ebay auction before we left!)

We were really calm laughing and joking although I felt the surges were really strong for stage one I tried to just relax and put it out of my mind as knew it was going to crank up over long period. Once in hopsital I still felt ok with strong surges but told them I really needed to poo so they examined me and said I was fully dilated and she was already moving out! No time for birthing pool!

The birthing phase took quite a while, think I was trying to breathe and relax a bit too much, but in the end I did have to do some pushing as they were threatening to intervene as my contractions were slowing down. The whole time had my hypno stuff on ipod, mainly the classical music I had been relaxing to and affirmations in final half hour.

The only bit that I found really painful was the last half hour – feel very empowered by whole thing – not even any gas and air! Placenta was a pain to deliver, lots of fiddling and pulling in the end- uterus clamped on it (think next time would opt for injection, not sure if this would have helped) and had a few stitches, but only minor tear so pleased about that.

Beautiful, healthy baby girl came at 6.32am (after 5 and a half hour labour) weighing 5 pounds 15. We came home the next day.

Beforehand I was practicing relaxation about 2 or 3 times a week and listening to affirmations every day. Also sat on my ball for at least half an hour a day leading up to labour. I had about 10 chilled tracks which I listened to a lot and used in labour. I had 3 positions in labour (not too easy with monitor on) – left side, kneeling leaning on the bed and delivered standing up! I thought gravity would be the final thing to help and did, thank god!

Also did some perineal massage and pelvic floor and core exercises (pulling tummy in) every day for whole of pregnancy – can already feel both sets of muscles coming back. Also, I exercised almost every day when I was pregnant which helped too (was on cross trainer day before!) – they said the placenta was very big and healthy!

I would recommend hypnobirthing to anyone (and boyf was VERY sceptical beforehand!) – I was terrified of labour when I found out I was pregnant and always thought I would demand a cesarean! Although not pain free was overall really positive and feel like I will recover fairly quickly – went to a baby shower when she was 2 days old and we have got out every day even though under-carriage and boobies still sore, certainly not unbearable.

Notes: As last week but went for first short run (20 mins)- very exciting!! Doing cardio for 45 minutes now 3 times a week. Also using twist board every day doing 100 twists. Running makes me realise I must do my pelvic floors!

Notes: Running going well, up to 45 mins. Slight discomfort in lower abs, so going to do any more yet. Still trying to do abs every day so seeing ongoing improvement. Feeling good!

Notes: Feeling almost back to normal but abs feel a bit weak low down – some ab exercises still a bit tricky (like scissor legs). Trying to do regular pelvic floors but not always easy to remember. Doing some intervals now on cross trainer and bike – upping the intensity and loving it.
